AMD makes dual cpu easily available!

Strengths: Works with existing single core s939 motherboard Much lower power consumption and heat output than Intel's dual cpu offerings FAST!

Weakness: Price is a little bit higher than intels lowest end dual cpu...but is justified by the performance

AMD has done a great job creating thier X2 line of cpus. These are simply the best dual core cpus you can have right now. They work with most existing s939 mainboards with just a simple bios update and your computer will be virtually lag free. Just having 2 cores allows your computer to multitask so much easier. One thing is you want to make sure you have plenty of system memory available in order to make your heavy multitasking experience the best possible. I would recommend 1-2GB for today. If you thought Intel's hyperthreading (2 virtual cpus) was fast, wait until you try AMD's 2 actual cpus in one! WOW!

Just Wow....

Strengths: This thing runs so fast its amazing.

Weakness: None.

Anyone who says that this processor is too pricey is sick. The performance you will get out of this processor is not comparable to Intels solution. You are getting what you pay for, period.

This CPU has a ton of overclocking room being that it is the AMD64 X2 processor with the lowest clock speed. I have over clocked to 2.5 GHz with stock heatsink and fan, idle temp is 37C and under load is approximately 47C. See my computer specs below.

If price isn't and issue, I'd suggest looking at the 4400+ X2 so that you can get the 1MB L2 Cache. I opted for this cause its $200 less and has a lot of overclocking room.

Athlon 64 X@ 3800 Dual Core Processor

Strengths: Speed Temperature

Weakness: none found

My system is an AMD Athlon 64 X2-3800 processor, Corsair 2GB DDR400 XMS3200 memory Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe motherboard, 2 Hitachi DeskStar T7K250 SATA II drives, and GeForce 6800GT graphic card. The drives are set up as simple C and D without Raid. I do a lot of graphic processing and business Database work and I was looking for speed as well reliability.

No complaints and no problems. The processor runs cool and has had not problems addressing all the software I run. The dual core aspects of the processor are impressive running Office 2003, PhotoShop, and Video editing applications.

I don’t know if I test this processor enough. I have not switched to a 64 bit operating system and am running 32 Bit XP Pro. All the talk about the lack of 64 bit drives is keeping me from moving away from the traditional 32 bit XP. So with my limited load I don't push the processors capabilities

Dual Core Rocks

Strengths: Dual Core, Very Fast, Works like an FX

Weakness: Price

Very Fast CPU, I do have a lot of use for Dual Core.

I do a lot of multi-tasking. Things like playing Games and encoding or decoding video on the background.

I usually have a lot of programs open, so being able to switch between them without freezing my system is something I must not be without.

Super fast chip can reach 4600+ or higher speeds

Strengths: Mines overclocked to 2.5 ghz on air and stock voltage

Weakness: none not one thing

This is a fantastic chip, will overclock like cazy and it's potential hasn't even been tested yet. Why buy a chip like Conroe when the potential for this chip hasn't even been used. Also why buy a 4200x2,4400x2,or 4600x2 when this chip can be overclocked passed thier speeds and is alot cheaper.

Loving it.

Strengths: By far, best value for the budget builder. I can not even believe the difference from my Pentium 4 1.5ghz,. Ability to slightly overclock with no temperature difference using stock heatsink.

Weakness: None

I built a budget dual core system, so the only thing that got me was the price dropped $50+ while my CPU was in the mail and didn't notice till I had it running. With the price drop I could have brought my budget PC in under $500, but still $550 for a Dual Core 2ghz is good. This is my first AMD and Intel will have a hard time getting me back.

Dual core is the future

Strengths: Speed. Low power consumption and temperature.

Weakness: Price, lack of 64 bit and dual core capable apps

The 3800+ is the low end of the AMD Athlon 64 X2 line, but is currently the based value. Any dual core will allow you to run a CPU intensive job in the background while still doing something meaningful with the machine. On my previous computer, trying to do any work while converting video was painful. Now, I don't even notice. Few apps are capabable of exploiting both cores simultaneously, but everything I have tried still zips along pretty well. 64 bit capable apps are limited, and finding drivers for older printers/scanners for Windows XP x64 can be impossible. Even some 32 bit apps that must interact with the OS will not work (i.e. all Symantec/Norton home products). The picture should improve with time as 64 bit is the future.

Be sure to use the AMD driver. There is also a Micro$oft hot-fix for 32-bit WinXP for dual-core processors. Before the hot-fix and driver update my system would freeze up often requiring a hard reboot.

Great Price/Performance

Strengths: Superb Multitasking Capabilities

Weakness: None

Theres a night and day difference between using a single core cpu, and a dual core. Even in something as nondemanding as navigating your way around Windows and browsing online... In the Windows Task Manager, all the ~30+ threads are evenly distributed between the cores, instead of all being crammed on one core, so theres no longer any annoying delays or pauses from waiting for things to have to be processed sequentially, one after the other, when you could be off doing something at the spur of the moment, whatever it might be. Most people give the example of being able to run two (or more) demanding applications at the same time, or rediculous speed in a multithreaded aware app (possibly doing multithreaded processing in a 64-bit application, for an even greater boost), and its very capable of that, but just having your computer always seem like its available to work, nomatter what else it may be doing, is quite a virtue. 64-bit performance is great as well; even smoother performance on Windows XP x64 compared to x86 Windows, though driver support is still comparetively sparce, but its getting better. On the overclocking side of things, an overclock of 2.4 GHz is pretty easily attainable with no stability issues, no voltage adjustments are necessary even. Ive been very happy with it though since the day I got it. And recommend it to anyone whos still stuck using a single core cpu, ESPECIALLY with the recent price drop.

This chip is perfect for making a top line system...

Strengths: Faster then p4 3.0ghz hyper-threaded by ALOT Overclockable to 2.2ghz (mine was) without a single glitch Cool!! runs at like 35 C under load (super pi to 4m)

Weakness: the more expensive dual core chips are overclocking even MORE. The intel chips are cheap atm (thier stock is low too :P) nothing really

I bought some nice memory and instantly and painlessly got 10% more speed out of this chip. I haven't pushed it as far as it takes to get it unstable but 2.0 to 2.2ghz is a whole price bracket for free. (of course, I've been drooling over the reviews of the faster chips OC'd speeds, up to 2.7ghz) very good deal for the $295 I paid for it. I would recommend it as the very least powerful CPU one should shoot for when building a new system.

Best value of the current dual core Athlon offerings

Strengths: Big step up from single core for multitasking, decent price, overclock potential

Weakness: None, really. Doesn't quite match Intel offerings when it comes to audio/video production speed, but the difference is pretty minor, a lot of people won't notice.

After building a system for a friend with an Athlon 64 3500+ last year, then seeing a X2 3800+ in action, I picked one up. Night and day compared to my old 2.53 ghz Pentium IV system. Not even close. Fantastic for those who like to do more than one thing...be it encoding video while playing a game or whatever. Haven't overclocked mine yet, but because it's on the "low end" speed-wise compared to the other X2 processors, it has some significant room for speed increases. At this writing, it's about 130 bucks between this processor and the 4200+, and that much money isn't worth that little of an increase. Just go with this one, and if you really need it, overclock it a little. Highly recommended processor!

You Want Fast? Get this baby!

Strengths: Simply put, this puppy doesn't joke around.

Weakness: None that I've expierenced.

This CPU just keeps kicking out the speed. Stepped up from a p4 1.6 and Oh my God, there is truly no comparison. Boots to Windows in under 15 seconds, with a lot of room to increase (OC) the kick.

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+

Strengths: Multitasking! I never have used 100% of my processor resource yet! Runs apps smoothly

Weakness: None so far

I have this processor installed in an Asus A8n-E motherboard. So far, have not had any problems. Have been running my computer 24/7. Does not run to loudly or hot.

superior design

Strengths: this is super fast

I love this cpu. It is so fast that i smile when i am sleeping. Overall, i think this is a better buy than dual pentium 4 cpu because whatever i look at it. It beats the pentium 4 dual core either way.

Strengths: This processor is a screamer.

I am very happy with this processor. It is very fast even though it was more than I have ever paid for a processor before, but I am very pleased with it. I have not multitasked with it yet but I think it will handle that with no problems.

Great upgrade from a single core S939 cpu

Strengths: Dual core, easy to overclock, easy end of the line cpu for a S939 setup.

Weakness: It's not an Intel Core 2 Duo.

I was skeptical that this would be a noticeable performance boost from a 3700+ San Diego cpu. I was very, very wrong. As a primarily Office productivity, statistical number crunching, & audio encoding computer user, this cpu runs laps around my previous single core cpus. I can simultaneously crunch a large dataset in SPSS, type a paper, create a PowerPoint presentation, rip CDs/DVDs, & search for/view PDFs online with little system slowdown.
If you're looking to go dual core from a single core S939, and don't want to drop the $$$ to buy a new mobo, ram, & a C2D cpu, the X2 3800+ is for you!

Perfect little gem

Strengths: Great performance at stock speeds, performs much better than my old P4 3 GHz with Hyperthreading. Price was once good, but hey, 939 has been on it's way out for a long time now

Weakness: 939 is out, AM2 is in, so price right now is terrible.

This is an updated review. I have been using this processor now for 4 months, and it has performed nicely. Sorry to say that back when I bought it, it was only 180 bucks. Price has almost doubled, seeing as people are moving up to AM2. AMD/ATI are spending time and recourses on their DirectX 10 video cards as well as the soon to be released 65nm CPUs, which will be used solely on the AM2 socket. No benchmarks out on their 65nm CPUs (to be released some time this month), so I can't say if they can touch the Core 2 Duo, but it should be close if not matched, and it could possibly surpass the Core 2. Hopefully.

This runs great. Haven't played games yet to benchmark, but love it so far. Don't buy thermalpaste, you don't need it. AMD supplies it with premounted thermal pad!
