WDs 4 The WinStrengths: Reliability, Quiet, Fast Weakness: None Over the past 9 years I've purchased 6 WD hardrives - still yet to have a WD hardrive to fail. In Jan I bought both the black and green - I use the caviar black for both media storage and gaming - works great. 100% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

black caviarStrengths: Works fine on video editing Weakness: None so far I bought three of these for my use and three Seagates for Christmas presents. Mine still work. The others don't. Seagate seems to be in the dumpster. They don't care or do not have the money to care. 67% of readers found this review helpful. Did you find it helpful or unhelpful? Top

Feb 27, 2009 I've used nothing but Western Digital drives since 1997, and have never had any issues. Sorry you got two bad ones, but it's hardly indicative of WD's quality. Check reviews on multiple sites, people. WD is highly-rated, and I can also attest to their (usual) high level of quality.

Apr 18, 2009 Ultimately there will always be someone who is able to counter positive or negative feedback based on their experices - in the end your future hd choices will depend on your past experiences and which hd brand served you best. I've used WD's since 2000 and I've still yet to experience loss of data due to WD failure. I've had to RMA two WD because of SMART failures; each time both parties successfully received the product without any issues. Just because UPS lost a package doesn't constitute a faulty product/RMA Service on WD's side. My apologies regarding series of unfortunate events related to a WD hd - but given WD's track record and my experience with them, I will continue to be a loyal customer.

The Best
Strengths: Fast, Quiet, reliable so far.
Weakness: None
I have two of these in a RAID 1 configuration. They have run flawlessly, and are extremely fast.
According to WD, this is the same basic drive mechanism as their RE3 enterprise drives, but without the vibration resistance or testing. I also have RE3's in my server, and these drives appear identical.
I own 20+ drives, and I so far have had no failures or SMART drive faults on any of the 7200 RPM WD 500G --> 1 TB drives. I haven't tried the 5400 RPM GP drives.
